Most cigar programs flop because they prioritize ritual over competence, in other words, showmanship over real skill.
Anyone can cut, light, and talk. Very few can run a cigar program that consistently delivers high-quality products every time.
Real competence is simple (and rare):
- Fermentation awareness: knowing why some cigars taste harsh or empty.
- Priming’s logic: understanding strength, burn, and evolution, not guessing.
- Construction sense: draw, burn, format behavior, and basic diagnosis.
- Storage control: stable humidor conditions (not a decorative box)
- Pairing rationale: technique and balance, not random premium with premium.
If your staff can’t explain these in plain language, you don’t have a premium program. You have a theatre.
If you run a lounge or hotel cigar corner, this is your revenue leak.
